Our Preschool Workshop Themes
Adventures in Air
Preschoolers learn that even though air is invisible it is all around them, all the time. They also learn that air has the power to move items and to slow them down. They experiment with a variety of items that rely on the air to help them move.
Animal Friends
Children become an animal, identify animal sounds, and learn all about animal babies and parents.
Bugs
Creepy, crawly critters that are everywhere in our day-to-day lives... how they walk, how they see, how many legs they have, and the unique shapes to their bodies. What do these little creatures eat and how do they survive in a world of giants?
Butterflies
Preschoolers will learn all about butterflies; where they come from, the stages of their growth, and how they eat. They even make some of their own winged critters to take home.
Che-Mystery
Explore the world of physical and chemical changes. Eliminate the mystery in chemistry! Explore one of the most exciting and fundamental sciences as you learn how to make your own sidewalk chalk!
Digging for Dinosaurs
Kids are introduced to the differences between meat-eating and plant-eating animals. They have the opportunity to look at some dinosaur teeth up close and work as paleontologists, by participating in a mini dinosaur dig that engages their attention and helps them improve their scientific knowledge.
Dry Ice Capades
Find out what a real Mad Scientist has inside those beakers and flasks! Learn the secret behind dry ice as we explore carbon dioxide, sublimation, and the three states of matter. This workshop is guaranteed to be a gas!
Energy & Motion
Kids explore the concept of energy and how it gets things moving. Toys are used to help explain simple energy ideas and capture preschoolers' attention. They also get to take home toys called “Boinks” that demonstrate how energy and motion are related.
Eye to Eye
This workshop introduces students to their sense of sight. They experiment with magnifying glasses, kaleidoscopes, and binoculars. The preschoolers also interact with a variety of optical illusions to illustrate that their eyes can sometimes play tricks on them.
Fluttering Birds
Children learn all about their fine feathered friends when they take an up-close look at birds. They discover how to match bird mates, see what eggs are produced by which species, learn how a bird's beak is a tool, and how to identify different birds' songs. They take home bird warblers to practice their bird songs at home.
Human Body
Children meet Mr. Bones, the skeleton, and learn about muscles and body systems.
Keep in Touch
Children learn what their sense of touch tells them about the world and they also learn that some objects are safe to touch while others are not. The preschoolers are presented with the challenge of identifying a variety of objects using only their sense of touch. They also experiment with an interesting material and make their very own creation.
Let's Look Closely
Children discover a world that they might not have realized was there, through the use of mirrors, microscopes, and magnifying glasses. They reveal hidden pictures, learn about reflection and symmetry, and use handheld microscopes to observe objects closely. They take away plastic magnifying glasses to continue their exploration at home.
Let's Measure
Preschoolers learn the basics of measurement by measuring all kinds of objects using balance beam scales, bathroom scales, and even their own feet! Children are introduced to the concept of estimation and take home a measuring foot to cut out with their parents.
Lights...Color....Action
Uncover the hidden components in ordinary light and make a chromatography bookmark to prove it. Learn about how our eyes see color and what happens to light when we break it up. Discover black lights and dance to the stroboscope. This program promises to be enlightening.
Lights On
Have you ever looked behind you on a sunny day? What do you see? Your shadow! Shadows are really hard to catch, but watch us catch it for just a minute in this class. Plus, find out the mystery behind white light!
Listen Closely
This workshop introduces kids to the science behind the sounds all around them. Kids experiment with a wave motion model and a twirling tube to help them understand that sound travels in waves and can be heard in a variety of pitches. They also learn about the everyday materials that make a variety of special effects noises in the movies and create their own special effects sounds.
Mad Mixtures
Kids learn about volcanoes and simple chemistry. They make their own modeling dough to take home.
Magnetic Attraction
Children experience the poles and power of magnets in this hands-on workshop that provides them with the opportunity to make their own magnet to take home.
Matter of Fact
Take a closer look at chemistry. We'll build, touch and explore the building blocks of all matter and create a wacky-wild concoction of silly putty!
Rocket Launch
Discover the dynamics of rocket flight. Touch and feel our model rockets while learning HOW and WHY they fly. Take part in a NASA-style launching of model rockets, which soar into the air and then return to Earth by parachute.
Science of Magic
Magic? No, it's science! Find out the secrets of Houdini. You'll learn the secrets behind famous magic tricks that you can recreate for yourself! Learn the science behind how diapers work like magic!
Science of Music
Boom, tap, smack, cha-cha-cha! Listen to the sounds and rhythm of the science of music. Children feel, hear, and see the vibrations that help create music in this hands-on exploration.
Sea, Sand & Surf
Children explore the science of the sea and learn about what sand is made from, how shells are used by animals for protection, and what animals live in the ocean.
Shapes and Structures
Children discover different shapes and structures by using different kinds of equipment, like Geoboards and Magnatiles. They create their own structure to take home using cornstarch-based “noodles.”
Space Frontiers
Take kids on a trip through the solar system and sign them up for the Mad Science Astronaut in Training Program, where they will learn all about the elements of space. They will even get to take their very own mini rocket home.
Water Works
Water is more complicated than it looks and through this exciting workshop children learn all about the different properties of water. They experiment with floating, sinking, absorption, and so much more.
Weather Wonders
