How long has Mad Science been running camps?

Mad Science of Washington has been running summer camps in the DC metro area since 1995.  In addition to the camps we run directly, we have partnered with local recreation departments, private schools, and other organizations to provide excellent summer science experiences.

What is the child to instructor ratio?

The child to instructor ratio varies depending on enrollment. We always have at least one counselor for every 13 students.

What ages are the camps designed for?

Most of our camps are designed for rising first graders to sixth graders. Our “Red Hot Robots” camp and “3, 2, 1 Blast-Off!” camp are targeted to rising second graders to sixth graders. If you have a 5-year old child who is entering kindergarten, some of our camps may be appropriate. Please call us for recommendations.

Are different aged children in the same camp?

Yes and no. A few of our camps are divided by age, but, for the most part, they are not. For some activities children may be divided up by age and/or ability, for other activities we may divide the kids up so the older kids can act as mentors to the younger children.   Also, our low child to instructor ratio ensures that there is always plenty of help. Please see the online registration form or call us to see which camps are divided by age.

Who are the Mad Science camp instructors?

Mad Science instructors tend to be teachers on summer break, college students pursuing an education or science degree, or former/retired teachers. Most of our instructors have worked for us in our after-school programs. All of our instructors have experience working with large groups of elementary-aged children and have undergone an extensive background check. They also receive summer-camp specific training. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share a love of working with children and the desire to spark and nurture their campers’ imaginations!

Do you offer extended care?

Yes, at most of our camps. Please check with us for more information. Morning extended care hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at a cost of $10/day; afternoon hours are from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at a cost of $20/day. If you choose the morning and afternoon extended care, the cost is $25/day. You can register for the entire week online, but please call us to register by day.  After-care may be canceled due to low enrollment, please register in advance to ensure your space. If your child is attending a partner-hosted camp, please contact them directly to secure arrangements with them.

How do I register my child for a camp?

Depending on the location of the camp, there may be many ways to register: mail, over the phone, in person, or online.  Please click "register" next to the camp you wish to register for on the schedule to be directed to the best way to register for that particular location.  The easiest way is through our online registration system. It takes about 5 minutes and accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and checks. All of our Mad Science hosted camps will be made available through our online registration system. Our partners’ camp registrations are handled directly through our partners (such as the school districts, parks & rec., etc.). On occasion, we provide registration assistance to a partner-hosted camp. Note: Registration requirements, start dates, end dates, and minimum camp size may vary by location. Due to limited spaces in each camp, we cannot reserve a space for your child until we receive your payment. If you are paying by check, we do not reserve your space until we receive the check.

How soon do I need to register to reserve a space for my child?

Some camps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date. We recommend that you register as soon as possible, because space availability depends on how quickly everyone else signs up!

Can I sign my child up for more than one camp?

Yes, in fact, we encourage it. Each camp is completely different so your child can enjoy them all without repeating activities. Last year, many children initially registered for only one camp. After they discovered how much they enjoyed our activities, they attempted to register for additional camps. Due to the popularity of many of our themes and weeks, several children were disappointed when the additional camps were already sold out.

Do you offer sibling or multi-camp discounts?

We offer discounts for additional enrollments, and for siblings. The first two camps your child(ren) sign up for is full price. Each additional full-day camp is discounted by $20 off the base price, each additional half-day camp is discounted by $10 off the base price. To receive the discount, smply register for multiple full-day or half day camps. Please note: the full-day and half-day disounts. You'll need two full-day or two half-day camps to receive the discount.

Please note, these discounts do not apply to our partner camp locations, even those for which we handle registration through our website.

My child has attended a Mad Science camp before. If he/she took a particular camp, will it be the same camp that he/she has taken before?

We do not make any major changes to the camps each year, although each counselor does do thing a little differently and some children do enjoy repeating a camp they have already taken.

My child has taken a Mad Science camp before, but I do not remember which one.

Please call or email us and we will be happy to look it up for you.

Does Mad Science have a minimum enrollment requirement?

The minimum enrollment varies from location to location.  In the event that we need to cancel a camp due to low enrollment, we will inform you no less than two weeks prior to the camp. On these occasions, we will offer priority enrollment in other camps. Contact us for additional information on camp cancellations.

What should my child bring/wear to camp?

Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun! Children should dress comfortably for that day's weather. We ask that children not wear open toed shoes to a Mad Science camp, specifically no flip-flops. Since we will spend some time outside and will be doing many hands-on activities, please do not dress your child in any clothes that you do not want to get dirty. You may wish to apply sunscreen or insect repellent, or send these items with your child. A hat and/or sunglasses may also be useful.

Some of our activities include food items that the children can eat as a snack, however we do not provide a snack every day. If your child would benefit from some additional calories during the day, please pack additional snack items. We cannot guarantee that coolers or refrigeration will be accessible at our camp-sites.

For full-day camps, we require parents to send a lunch and snacks. PLEASE AVOID NUT BASED FOODS. This includes peanuts and all tree nuts. Please clearly mark your child's name on all items he/she brings to the camp.

Medical information about your camper

We do not require any additional medical information beyond what is asked in the on-line registration. However, if your child has any medical or behavioral issues that may need to be addressed at camp, please fill out the Happy Camper Form and send it in with your child on the first day, email it to, or contact us in advance. This is to assist the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper.

You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. However, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind.

By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.

Are these the only locations where you will be holding your camps this summer?

Maybe not. We are in discussion with many locations to provide our Mad Science camps. Please look at our website on a regular basis as we will be updating our schedule as soon as additional locations are added. Also, if you have a particular location in mind, please bring it to our attention.

Start your own Mad Science camp

If our schedule does not work with YOUR schedule then bring Mad Science to you! All you need is 12 children and a safe place to hold the camp! Flat fees and alternet pricing are available for smaller groups.

We may even be able to adjust the start time, length of the day, number of days, or customize our programming to exactly match your needs.

Location needs for a Mad Science camp are:
  • Table/desk space and a chair for each camper
  • A table for the Mad Scientist's equipment
  • Access to electricity and water
  • The ability to darken the room
  • A nearby outside area (approximately 100 ft x 100 ft)

Mad Science provides everything else! Please contact us for more details.
